Srinagar, Jan 15: The groundbreaking Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele-MANAS) cell at the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) Srinagar has revolutionized mental health support in Jammu and Kashmir. Since its launch on November 4, 2020, Tele-MANAS has received over 75,000 calls, providing a beacon of hope for individuals grappling with stress, anxiety and addiction.
This pioneering initiative offers a comprehensive three-tier support system, comprising mental health counselors, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists. An official at IMHANS revealed that approximately 90% of calls were routine inquiries, while 10% involved crisis interventions for individuals with self-harming tendencies.
Tele-MANAS operates 24/7, with an average of 130 calls daily and a peak of over 300 calls in 24 hours. The average call duration is 20-30 minutes, depending on the nature of the issue. Notably, the helpline has prevented multiple suicide cases by providing crisis management.
The toll-free helpline number, 14416/1-800-891-4416, has been a game-changer for those hesitant to seek treatment due to social stigma. This initiative bridges the gap for those avoiding treatment, offering mental health services and drug de-addiction support to the general public.
Tele-MANAS is particularly beneficial for patients from remote areas, who face challenges accessing healthcare facilities due to blocked roads during winter. This service enables them to access treatment from the comfort of their homes.
Studies conducted by IMHANS highlight the significant mental health challenge faced by Kashmir. A 2016 study revealed that 11.3% of the adult population in the valley suffers from mental illness. Another study in 2015 indicated that nearly one in five individuals in Kashmir exhibits symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Tele-MANAS has emerged as a vital resource, providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals to discuss their mental health concerns. As the helpline continues to receive an overwhelming response, it is clear that this initiative has filled a critical gap in mental health support in Jammu and Kashmir.
