Kulgam Woman Empowers Herself and Others through Crewel Work Centre

Humaira Farooq, a 25-year-old woman from Kund, Kulgam, has embarked on an extraordinary journey of self-empowerment and community development. Recognizing the significance of financial independence, Humaira took the initiative to establish a crewel work centre, providing a livelihood for herself and 10 other women in her area. This remarkable venture is a testament to her determination and the transformative impact of government schemes, which have enabled her to turn her dreams into reality.

Education

After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree, Humaira joined the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) in 2018, a decision that marked the beginning of her journey towards financial freedom. Through the NRLM, she formed a Self Help Group (SHG) with like-minded women in her community, and together, they began to access loans from the department. Starting with a modest amount of Rs. 15,000, they gradually increased their borrowing to Rs. 40,000 and eventually Rs. 1 lakh. This financial support enabled Humaira and her group members to establish a crewel work centre, where they design and manufacture various items, such as bed sheets and curtains, which they sell to customers.’
