The Jammu and Kashmir government is making significant strides in enhancing eco-tourism and conservation efforts at Wular Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. On March 5, 2025, officials announced a comprehensive initiative involving an investment of ₹18.73 crore for the construction of walkways and jetties, aimed at promoting sustainable tourism while preserving the lake’s ecological integrity.

As part of this initiative, the government has allocated funds for the restoration and management of Wular Lake, which includes dredging efforts to remove silt and improve water-holding capacity. The Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) has been actively implementing a Comprehensive Management Action Plan (CMAP) since its establishment in 2012. This plan has already seen the restoration of 5 square kilometers of critically silted areas by dredging approximately 78.43 lakh cubic meters of silt, thereby increasing the lake’s ability to hold water.

In addition to the current investment, an additional ₹22.09 crore has been earmarked for new projects in the upcoming financial year. These projects will focus on further developing eco-tourism infrastructure, including cycling tracks and additional recreational facilities. The construction of a 2.5 km non-motorable walkway with cycling tracks, lookout points and jetties at Banyari and S.K. Payeen is set to enhance visitor experience while ensuring minimal environmental impact.

The minister in charge of Forest, Ecology and Environment emphasized that all restoration activities adhere to guidelines established by Wetlands International South Asia (WISA), ensuring that biodiversity is not adversely affected. An impact study conducted by the National Institute of Hydrology aims to assess the ecological effects of these interventions and recommend necessary corrective measures.

Wular Lake plays a crucial role in supporting local livelihoods, contributing 60% of Kashmir’s total fish production and directly benefiting around 5,200 registered fishermen. The government is also promoting eco-tourism as a means to provide sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. Initiatives include transforming areas around Wular into eco-tourism hubs with activities like birdwatching camps and environmental awareness programs designed to engage local residents in conservation efforts.

Despite facing challenges such as pollution and encroachment, ongoing conservation initiatives are aimed at protecting this vital ecosystem. The lake’s surrounding villages are being involved in solid waste management projects to prevent waste from entering the lake, further supporting the health of this important wetland.

In conclusion, the Jammu and Kashmir government’s commitment to restoring Wular Lake through substantial investments in eco-tourism infrastructure not only aims to enhance tourism but also ensures long-term ecological sustainability. By fostering community involvement and adhering to conservation principles, Wular Lake is poised to become a significant eco-tourism destination while preserving its rich biodiversity for future generations.
