Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has been officially recognized as a ‘World Craft City’ by the World Craft Council. This prestigious honor underscores the city’s rich heritage and the exceptional skills of its artisans.

The declaration has sparked a surge in tourist interest, with visitors flocking to downtown Srinagar. Tourists are witnessing the intricate processes behind Kashmir’s famed crafts. Tourists from around world are eager to experience making of Pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets and intricately carved walnut woodwork.

Travel agents have included craft tours in their packages, catering to the growing demand. Henceforth, foreigners, in particular, are drawn to city’s vibrant markets and workshops. Plus they are eager to immerse themselves in the culture and heritage of Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the recognition has also boosted the morale of local artisans and craft associations. They believe this will revive interest in traditional crafts and provide sustainable livelihoods for thousands of skilled workers.

Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Mahmood Ahmad Shah, highlights the significance of the title, stating:
